George V Silver Matchbox Cover, Birmingham, 1920
This is a smart, pocket size George V Sterling Silver Matchbox Cover. The cover is book shaped and envelops the matchbox. A vintage empty Ship matchbox of the correct size is included. These smaller size matchbox covers would fit neatly into a pocket or handbag.
The matchbox cover was made in Birmingham for London retailer Gourdel, Valès & Co and dates to 1920. Gourdel, Valès & Co began in Paris, founded by Constant Valès in 1827, before later opening in London in the 1850s. They had premises in Great Marlborough Street and specialised in imported French and Austrian luxury items alongside British made items that they commissioned from makers in London, Birmingham and Sheffield. They ceased trading in 1939.
The matchbox cover has definitely seen some use and has a few little dings on the body, only what you would expect from an item that has spent over 100 years in someone's pocket or handbag. However it is sound, with no splits and remains perfectly functional. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The cover measures 4.2cm / 1.6ins by 3cm / 1.2ins and is 1.2cm / 0.47ins deep. It weighs in at 9.6g / 0.34oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The main hallmarks are well struck and clear to read but the sponsors' mark is somewhat rubbed though still legible. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter v for 1920 and the G.V & Co sponsors' mark for Gourdel, Valès & Co.
