George V Silver Matchbox Cover, Walker & Hall 1920
This is a good quality George V Sterling Silver Matchbox Cover. The cover is rectangular and open on all four sides to give access to the matches and the strikes on the sides of the matchbox. The top is engraved with a crest of a unicorn.
The matchbox cover was made in Birmingham by famous silversmiths Walker & Hall and dates to 1920. The firm was founded by George Walker in 1845 with Henry Hall joining in 1853 to form Walker & Hall. Hugely successful and very highly regarded they remained in business until they were merged with Mappin & Webb and Elkington & Co to form British Silverware in 1963.
Condition is good with just a slight indent to one side of the opening and a tiny nick in the top right hand corner of the top plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 100 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The matchbox cover is 6.1cm / 2.4ins long, 3.8cm / 1.5ins wide and 1.9cm / 0.75ins high. It weighs in at a respectable 37.3g / 1.3oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the base are nice and clear apart from the makers' mark, which is a little rubbed but still identifiable. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter v for 1920 and the W & H in a bow makers' mark for Walker & Hall.
Shipping in the UK is £6.50 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
