Two Handled Silver Bowl, Boodle & Dunthorne, 1936

This is an elegant Edward VIII Sterling Silver two handled small round bowl with a scalloped rim and pedestal base. The bowl is made by Boodle & Dunthorne of Liverpool and assayed in Birmingham in 1936. Liverpool has never had an assay office so items made there have always been sent elsewhere in the country to be tested and hallmarked.
Boodle & Dunthorne, known just as Boodles today, are a luxury retailer of high quality antique jewellery and silver with a history stretching back to 1798 and remain a family run firm. Their head office is still on the corner of Lord Street in Liverpool, a premises they moved into in 1920.
As you would expect from Boodle & Dunthorne, this is a well made piece in a very good gauge of silver. The stepped pedestal base is a nod to Art Deco but the flowing handles and rim hark back to earlier, more Art Nouveau styles. The bowl is multi-functional and could be used as a bonbon dish, for condiments on the table, for pot pourri or even awarded as a small trophy. It has no engraving or personalisation of any kind and makes a very decorative item in its own right.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents and only the most superficial surface wear that is inevitable after over 80 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The bowl is 7.7cm / 3" in diameter, 10.8cm / 4.25" across from handle to handle and stands 7.2cm / 2.9" high to the top of the handles. It weighs a substantial 78.6g / 2.77oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the side of the bowl are crisp and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter "M" for 1936 and the B&D makers' mark for Boodle & Dunthorne. The underside of the base is also stamped Boodle & Dunthorne Liverpool.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery which includes cover for the value of the item.
