Victorian Irish Silver Teaspoon, John Smyth, 1892
This is a good quality late Victorian Irish Sterling Silver Bright Cut Teaspoon in the Irish or Celtic Point pattern with Bright Cut engraving in the Star pattern. Irish Point is a specifically Irish version of the traditional Old English pattern and the Star pattern of bright cut engraving is particularly associated with Dublin.
The teaspoon dates to 1892 and was made in Dublin by John Smyth & Sons. John Smyth founded his business in the late 1820s, becoming John Smyth & Sons around 1876. They are best known as spoon makers and for producing tea and coffee services although later they also retailed ecclesiastical silver from premises in Grafton Street.
Condition is good with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 120 years of use. The cartouche at the top of the stem is blank. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The teaspoon is 11.4cm / 4.5" long and weighs a respectable 12.7g / 0.45oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the underside of the stem are well struck and clear to read. They show the crowned harp for Irish Sterling Silver, the Hibernia assay mark for Dublin, the date letter "W" for 1892 and the J.S makers' mark for John Smyth & Sons. There is also a stamp for M. FALK, which was probably the retailer that sold the spoon.
