Victorian Silver Card Case, Edward Smith, 1855

Here we have an attractive Victorian Sterling Silver Card Case. The card case is oblong with a scalloped edge and a hinged lid. The front has a crest in the cartouche of a greyhound in front of tree, a device used by the Henden family and the Mawson family. The back has a scene of a country church within an oval cartouche. Both front and back are extensively decorated with flowers and scolls.
The card case was made in Birmingham by Edward Smith, one of the very best card case makers, and dates to 1855. Edward Smith registered his mark at the Birmingham assay office in 1826 and set up his workshop at Cox Street in the Jewellery Quarter. He is best known for his fine quality card cases and vinaigrettes but also made other small silver items. He remained in business until the mid 1860s.
Condition is good, with just a few little dings to the edges plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect after 170 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The card case is 9.9cm / 3.9ins by 6.9cm / 2.7ins and weighs in at a very respectable 59.5g / 2.1oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the inside rim, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter G for 1855, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the E S makers' mark for Edward Smith.
Shipping in the UK is £12.00 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the card case.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
