Victorian Silver Card Case, W Neale, Chester, 1895

Here we have a handsome late Victorian Sterling Silver Card Case in its original outer box. The card case is oblong with diagonal ribs on both sides and a cutaway finger notch at the front to access the cards. The box has a black leather outer cover with rose coloured satin lining in the lid and a maroon coloured velvet tray holding the case. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The card case was made by William Neale & Son for the Mappin & Webb showroom in London and assayed in Chester in 1895. William Neale founded his firm in Birmingham in 1862, becoming William Neale & Son in 1890. They produced a very wide range of silverware from trophies to tea services and cigarette boxes to pencils and were highly successful. They remained in business into the mid 1960s.
Condition is extremely good, with just the superficial surface wear that has to be anticipated after 130 years of good service. The box is a little scuffed on the outside but the interior is smart and both the hinges and the clasp are in full working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The card case measures 8cm / 3.1ins by 4.3cm / 1.7ins and weighs in at 38.0g / 1.34oz of solid Sterling Silver. Boxed up it measures 11.3cm / 4.4ins by 7.6cm / 3ins and weighs 83.3g / 2.94oz.
The hallmarks, near the cutaway opening, are nice and easy to read with just a little rubbing to the makers' mark. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword and three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the date letter M for 1895 and the W.N makers' mark for William Neale & Son.
Shipping in the UK is £11.50 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the card case.
