Victorian Silver Cigarette Case, Birmingham, 1887
Here we have an attractive Victorian Sterling Silver Cigarette Case. The case is formed of diagonal ribs and has a gilt interior. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The cigarette case was made in Birmingham by H. Bros and dates to 1887. H. Bros were active in Birmingham in the 1880s and 1890s. There is very little information available about them but their mark is most commonly seen on smoking accessories and small items of antique jewellery.
The cigarette case has a few shallow dings, mostly on the corners, plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 135 years of use, much of it spent in a pocket or handbag. The hinge and clasp are in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The cigarette case measures 8.5cm / 3.3ins by 5.3cm / 2.1ins and is 1.5cm / 0.59ins deep. It weighs in at a respectable 60.0g / 2.1oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the inside of the case, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham the date letter n for 1887, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the H. Bros makers' mark.
Shipping in the UK is £11.50 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the case.
