6 x Silver Coffee Bean Spoons, Cooper Bros, 1919
This is a good set of six George V Sterling Silver Coffee Spoons with Coffee Bean finials. These were very popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries with the early ones having wooden coffee beans but these were soon replaced by the new magic material of bakelite, as is the case with this set.
The coffee spoons were made in Sheffield by well known silversmiths Cooper Brothers & Sons and date to 1919, just after the First World War. The firm was established in 1866 by brothers Thomas & John Cooper, becoming Cooper Brothers & Sons Ltd in 1895. They produced a wide range of silverware and silver plate but are best known for their high quality cutlery and flatware in many different patterns. The business was finally bought out in 1983.
Condition is good, with no dings or dents in the silver, no damage to the bakelite coffee beans and just the overall surface wear that you would expect after over 100 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each spoon is 10.1cm / 3.98ins long and the set of six together weighs in at a respectable 49.2g / 1.74oz.
The hallmarks, on the back of the bowls, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter b for 1919 and the C.B & S in a shield makers' mark for Copper Brothers & Sons.
