Arts & Crafts Silver Photo Frame, Chester, 1902

Here we have a handsome Arts & Crafts Style Sterling Silver Photo Frame from the Edwardian era. The rectangular visible picture size is 5.75ins by 3.75ins. The front of the frame has a planished or hammered finish, characteristic of the Arts & Crafts style, with a scalloped gadrooned rim around the outside and a blank circular cartouche at the top. The easel back is covered in green velvet.
The photo frame was made by the renowned silversmiths James Deakin & Sons and assayed in Chester in 1902. James Deakin founded the firm in 1866 and by 1878 and had been joined by his son William as partner, with two further sons joining in the 1880s. The company was very successful with manufacturing in Sheffield and Birmingham alongside showrooms in London, Glasgow and Belfast. They remained in business until the mid 1930s.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents in the silver and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 120 years of good service. The green velvet backing is somewhat worn, as you would anticipate, but the hinges and strut are in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The frame stands 22.5cm / 8.8ins high and is 19cm / 7.5ins wide. It is 21.5cm / 8.5ins deep with the strut fully extended and weighs 321g / 11.3oz.
The hallmarks, in the centre at the bottom of the frame, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword and three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the cursive date letter B for 1902 and the J D over W D makers' mark for John and William Deakin of James Deakin & Sons.
Shipping in the UK is £13 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the frame.
