Victorian Travelling Inkwell, George Reid, 1839

Here we have a wonderful Early Victorian Sterling Silver Mounted Cut Glass Travelling Inkwell. The inkwell is oblong with a hobnail cut body. The silver top rim and hinged lid are engine turned around a blank circular cartouche. There is a small piece of leather set into the lid to form a seal and the lid is secured by a screw with a folding turner.
The inkwell was made in London by silversmith George Reid and dates to 1839, just two years into Queen Victoria's long reign. George Reid registered his first mark at Goldsmiths Hall in London in 1811. He was active up until his death in 1843 producing small pieces of high quality silverware. The firm was taken over by Ann Reid, probably his widow, who carried on in business until the late 1840s.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents in the silver and no chips or cracks in the glass, just the overall superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after over 185 years of good service. The hinge is in good working order and the screw closure operates smoothly. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The inkwell is 7.9cm / 3.1ins long, 3.1cm / 1.2ins wide and 3.6cm / 1.4ins high. It weighs 138.8g / 4.9oz.
The hallmarks, on the side of the body, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the Gothic date letter D for 1839, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the G R makers' mark for George Reid.
Shipping in the UK is £12 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the inkwell.
