George III Silver Basting Spoon-Smith & Fearn 1793
Here we have a good quality George III Sterling Silver Basting Spoon in the classic Old English pattern. The spoon has a crest of an arm with the hand holding a sword engraved at the top of the stem.
The basting spoon is made in London by the partnership of George Smith & William Fearn and dates to 1793. Specialist spoon makers George Smith & William Fearn were both part of an interlinked group of families that also included the Eleys and the Chawners and would ultimately emerge as Chawner & Co in the mid-19th century. Smith & Fearn's spoons and flatware are always of consistently good quality.
Condition is extremely good with no dings or dents and just the most minimal superficial surface wear. This spoon has clearly been well looked after for over 225 years! Please make sure to view all the photographs.
This large basting spoon is 29.8cm / 11.7ins long and weighs a very substantial 97.1g / 3.4oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the underside of the stem are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter s for 1793, the George III duty mark and the G.S over W.F makers' mark for George Smith & William Fearn.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the spoon.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
