Here we have a handsome George V Sterling Silver Inkwell. The inkwell is of capstan style with a broad circular spreading base, with a wood insert for stability, and a hinged lid. The well in the centre has a clear glass liner. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The inkwell was made by renowned silversmiths James Deakin & Sons and assayed in Chester in 1917. James Deakin founded the firm in 1866 and by 1878 and had been joined by his son William as partner, with two further sons joining in the 1880s. The company was very successful with manufacturing in Sheffield and showrooms in London, Glasgow and Belfast. In 1935 they were involved in an ill-fated merger which led to the company's collapse within a couple of years.

Condition is very good, with just a small crease in the lid and a couple of truly tiny dings in the base plus the superficial surface wear that has to be anticipated after over 100 years of good service. There are no chips or cracks in the glass liner. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The inkwell is 10.5cm / 4.1ins in diameter across the base and stands 5.2cm / 2ins high. It weighs in at 139.7g / 4.93oz but this does of course include the wooden insert in the the base.

The hallmarks, at the front of the base, are a little rubbed but can still be read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword and three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the date letter R for 1917 and the J.D over W.D makers' mark for John and William Deakin of James Deakin & Sons.
