George V Silver Table Lighter, Chester, 1915

This is an elegant George V Sterling Silver Table Lighter from the middle of the First World War. The lighter is shaped as a chamberstick with a circular base and a scroll handle. The rim is beaded and there is a domed top to the oil reservoir. The wick holder simply pulls out of the centre for refilling. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
This type of table lighter would have been used primarily for lighting cigars and would have most probably been used at a card or games table, perhaps in a gentleman's club or in an intimate dining setting.
The table lighter was made by silversmiths Stokes & Ireland Ltd and assayed in Chester in 1915. The firm was established in Birmingham by William Henry Stokes & Arthur George Ireland in 1891 and operated from premises in Great Hampton Street in the famous Jewellery Quarter. Although Birmingham based, the majority of their pieces were assayed in Chester with only a few marked in their home town of Birmingham. They produced a very broad range of consistently good quality silverware and remained in business until the late 1930s.
Condition is good with just a shallow bruise to the front below the wick holder plus the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after over 105 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The lighter is 7.8cm / 3.1ins from rim to handle, 7.3cm / 2.9ins in diameter and stands 5cm / 1.9ins high. It weighs in at a very respectable 51.8g / 1.8oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the base, are crisp and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword and three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the date letter P for 1915 and the S.I.Ld makers' mark for Stokes & Ireland Ltd.
