Silver Egg Spoon Newcastle Thomas Sewell 1858

For sale a fine quality early mid 19th century English provincial silver fiddle pattern without shoulders egg spoon and with period monogrammed initials.
Details:
Silversmith: Thomas Sewell
Year of manufacture: 1858
Assay office: Newcastle
Approximate Dimensions:
Width of bowl: 2 cm
Length: 12.5 cm
Weight: 11 grams
History
Thomas Sewell worked as an apprentice under Thomas Watson in 1818. Whatson was one of Newcastle's most reputed silversmiths. Sewell's silver sponsor mark was first registered on the 20th January 1846, so this spoons is one of his earlier pieces.
The Newcastle Assay office was officially opened in 1702 (although silver was made there before this date) and closed in 1884, so this spoon is even more rare and precious as one has not been able to buy Newcastle assayed silver for 116 years and is thus very collectible.
This is a rare provincial spoon with a beautiful arch shape with fiddle pattern terminus, gracefully blends sophisticated curves and lines demonstrating superb craftsmanship. This fabulous Victorian spoon would make a welcome addition to a collector of rare provincial silver collection.
Condition report:
In very good condition, some surface scratches and marks, some deeper scratches to the tip of the bowl.
Free Postage Within the U.K.
