Edwardian Silver Dip Pen, E. Baker, Birmingham
Here we have a fine quality Edwardian Sterling Silver Dip Pen. The pen has a long slender body with a ball finial which can be pushed in to remove the nib. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The dip pen was made in Birmingham by E. Baker & Son and dates to between around 1907 and 1910. The nib is a Perry & Co Silver Wonder. Founded in 1902 by Edward Baker, the firm operated from premises in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. They specialised in silver pens, pencils and writing accessories, although they did also make some smoking accessories. The firm was very successful and remained in business until it was bought by the Yard-O-Led pencil company in 1955, who retained the Baker brand into the early 1970s.
Condition is very good, with just one small ding on the body of the pen plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 100 years of good service. The nib is in excellent condition. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The pen is 16.6cm / 6.5ins long with the nib in place and it weighs in at 11.3g / 0.4oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the body of the pen are quite rubbed but you can make out the E.B makers' mark for E. Baker & Son, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham and the lion passant for Sterling Silver. The date mark is very rubbed but is of the style for the Edwardian period. There is also a registered design number of 507304, which shows that the original design dates to 1907, so it can't be earlier than this.
Shipping in the UK is £4.50 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For.
