George III Silver Salt Spoon, James Beebe, 1812
This is a good quality George III Sterling Silver Salt Spoon in the traditional Fiddle pattern with a gilded bowl. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind engraved onto the spoon. It is perfectly usable today for salt, ground pepper or table sauces or would make a nice addition to a collection.
The salt spoon is made in London by James Beebe and dates to 1812, whilst the Napoleonic Wars were at their height. This is an early spoon by James Beebe who only registered his mark with the London assay office in August 1811. He was a specialist spoon maker who remained in business up until the late 1840s and his work is of consistently good quality.
Condition of the spoon is good with no dings or dents. The gilding of the bowl is rubbed fairly thin after many years of cleaning but apart from that there is only the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after nearly 210 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The spoon is 9.9cm / 3.9ins long and weighs a respectable 10g / 0.35oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the underside of the stem are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the London date letter R for 1812, the George III duty mark and the JB makers' mark for James Beebe.
