Waring and Gillow
Waring and Gillow - Furniture makers founded in 1903. From the amalgamation of Warings of Liverpool and Gillows of Lancaster.
Gillows was founded by Robert Gillow in around 1730 and, along with his two sons, quickly got recognised to be one the best cabinet makers of their time. Gillows stamped their furniture but not all, their stamp 'Gillows Lancaster' was seen from the 1780s to around 1860.
In the 1860s, the mark consisted of a capital L and a serial number with 'Gillows Lancaster'. After that the stamp read 'Gillow & Co' then 'Waring & Gillow'.
Warings was founded by John Waring. He was succeeded by his son Samuel James Waring who rapidly expanded the business during the 1880s, furnishing hotels and public buildings throughout Europe. In 1980 'Waring and Gillow' joined with the cabinet-making firm 'Maple & Co.' to become 'Maple, Waring and Gillow' subsequently part of 'Allied Maples Group Ltd.' which includes Allied Carpets.
